Some background on the day…

World Statistics Day was declared by the United Nations back in February 2010 and is celebrated every 5 years. The purpose of the day is to recognize the role that statistics plays in helping people make decisions all around the world.

Whether it be policymakers deciding which nations require the most aid, businesses deciding how best to spend their revenue or private individuals deciding which country has the best weather for travel, statistics play an important role every day in shaping the world we live in.

When it comes to buying or selling your car, stats can make a huge difference to your bottom line. At Prices People Pay we provide the latest data on used car prices from dealers and auctions all across Australia. By accessing these stats, you can make informed decisions on the value of a car.

But enough about us, in celebration of the day, here are some interesting stats about cars from all around world.

How many cars are there in the world?

Over 1 billion, or roughly 1 car for every 8 people. In 2019 over 77 million cars were produced globally which is actually down from the past 2 years, potentially indicating a peak in car production.

Which countries have the most cars?

The United states leads all countries with a fleet of over 270 million cars. This is followed by China where it’s estimated there are roughly 250 million cars, particularly extraordinary given just 10 years ago it was less than a third of that amount. Following behind the big two are Japan and Brazil, both having roughly 70-80 million cars, with Russia rounding out the top five with 55 million cars.

Which countries have the most cars per person?

Small but wealthy countries like famed Monaco top the list, however New Zealand is probably the country with the most sizable population having high car ownership. The Kiwis have roughly 1.15 cars for every person after accounting for only the driving age population, meaning there’s more cars than there are people to (legally) drive them.

Where are car markets growing the fastest?

China dominates the world in car production with over 30% of cars now being produced within its borders. The majority of this production filters into the domestic market, with foreign exports only making traction in the last 5 years. However, India is actually considered the fastest growing car market due to its immense, growing population but low measure of car ownership.

What are the highest selling cars in world history?

The Toyota Corolla is the highest selling car in the world with over 40 million units sold to date, which is no surprise given its reputation for reliability. Following second is the Ford F-Series, the tough pickup from the United States, selling roughly 35 million units with over a million sales in 2018 alone. Matching this is the Volkswagen Golf, also selling 35 million units, and its estimated that one is sold every 41 seconds. The iconic Volkswagen Beetle comes in next with over 24 million sales worldwide, having been available for sale since 1938.

What’s the highest selling car in Australian history?

The Ford Falcon, which was in production from 1960 to 2016, sold over 3 million units. A rarer site these days, just 10 years ago they were still a mainstay in Aussie households. They are still traded often with dozens of sales prices in our data, proving their popularity.

How many cars are there in Australia?

As of January 2019 there were 19.5 million cars registered in Australia.

What is the average age of cars in Australia?
